Dr. Shamnad Basheer is a well-known Indian legal scholar who studied at NLSIU and later at Oxford. He worked at Anand and Anand, a leading intellectual property law firm in New Delhi, and worked on a variety of contentious and non-contentious IP matters before being called upon to head the firm’s Technology and Media law division. India. The IFLR 1000 guide rated him as a leading technology lawyer. He is the founder of SpicyIP blog, which he co-authors with Swaraj Barooah. Spicy-IP, started in 2005, is a blog on intellectual property rights, the first of its kind at the time. Shamnad Basheer is also the founder and managing trustee of IDIA – Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education. IDIA a trust which works on making legal education accessible for underprivileged students across India, helping them to achieve their dreams of attending a National Law School.  Shamnad Basheer was a  Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, and the Frank H. Marks Visiting Associate Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the George Washington University Law School. Shamnad Basheer is also well known for his work in landmark Novartis case and has filed a number of other public interest litigations.

Mr. Raghul Sudheesh, is a distinguished legal journalist noted for his investigative style of journalism. He graduated from the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Ernakulam in 2011. He started his career as the Associate Editor of the premier news portal, Bar & Bench, with the recommendation of Shamnad Basheer. He subsequently moved to co-found Live Law, a legal news portal. After his four year stint with legal journalism, he routed into legal publishing industry venturing Lexlab. He is a well-known RTI activist.

Mr. Manoj Pillai is an advocate with 25 years of experience and is currently a practitioner at the Supreme Court of India and the High Courts of Madras, Delhi, Karnataka and Kerala.  He is a member of the Law Society of England and Wales and holds a right to practice as Solicitor of England and Wales. Mr Pillai is the Chairman of Tamil Chamber of Commerce; IPR Committee and is an IPR Consultant for Andhra Chamber of commerce.  He received an award as the IPR Consultant from Governor of Tamil Nadu. He is currently the Managing Partner at the legal firm Manoj and Chitra which is an international legal service provider and promotes a concept called preventive litigation.

Mr.Swaraj Paul Barooah did his BA.LL.B degree from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad in 2009. He went on to UC Berkeley to do his LLM in 2010 and is currently a JSD Candidate there. His LLM thesis was on ‘Drug Innovation Policy and Access to Medicines’; and his ongoing JSD dissertation is focusing on deeper issues in this same area. His core IP interest areas are International IP policy, innovation, pharma patents and digital freedoms. His major gripe with IP today primarily revolves around uninformed and/or biased policy making, especially so in the context of developing vs. developed country debates; and hopes to play some kind of role in driving more debate and discussion on these issues. He is currently in the process of starting up a Delhi based think/do tank called “Knowledge Governance and Policy (Know-GAP), which will focus on areas of IP, innovation and information policy.

Adv. Elizabeth Puthren is a trademark and patent attorney. She has an experience of over 2 decades in the field of intellectual property rights. She passed LLB with the University first rank and won a gold medal. She has done her LLM in Intellectual Property rights. She was the head of De Penning and De Penning, one of the oldest Intellectual property law firms in India. She is a founder partner of Puthran & Associates and currently heading and managing the firm which deals with IPR Portfolio Management; Patent Law and Procedure; Filing, Prosecution and Enforcement of Patents, Trade Marks, Copyrights, Industrial Designs, Geographical Indications, Domain Names; both in India as well as abroad, IP Due Diligence and IP Valuation. She is a member of Trade Marks Association (INTA); “Well Known & Famous Trademarks” committee in INTA and Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA). Also, she is the founding member of Intellectual Property Association of South India (IPASI). She has initiated several seminars in Universities and Research Institutions. She has been a Panel member for various discussions with Management Bodies on IP law. She acts as a mentor for research students in various educational institutions and works closely with government bodies to create awareness and enforcement of IP rights.

Ms. Swapna Sundar’s experience in the field of intellectual property spans over a decade. As the CEO of IP DOME – IP Strategy Advisors, she handles the business administration, human resources management, etc. but she also supports the team in their IP negotiations, litigation, licensing agreements, brand building, market monitoring, and etc. for a global clientele. Apart from her company, Swapna Sundar lectures as a guest faculty for the NALSAR Pro Patents Law Course, the M.L IPR course in the School of Excellence at the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law College. During her academic career as a teacher’s assistant, she led seminars in British Constitutional Law and British Human Rights Law at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. She has published a number of works in the field of intellectual property among others. Her book ‘IP SMART WORKBOOK’ published by LexisNexis was recently launched by the Governor of Tamil Nadu. The foreword for the book has been written by Mr.Justice S. Ramasubramanian of the Madras High Court. The book has been prescribed for courses at IIM Ranchi and IIM Kolkata.
